After raising a family of four sons and accumulating nearly three decades of experience in various roles such as a dinner lady, lollipop lady, and classroom assistant, Marion Kingman was encouraged by a friend to consider a career in care work. Inspired by her friend, Marion decided to take the plunge into a new professional journey with Northwood Nursing, now known as Berkeley Home Health Northwood.
Journey and Professional Growth:
Marion’s transition into care work was both challenging and rewarding. Initially, she had to learn on the job, adapting quickly to the demands of the role. However, her commitment to personal and professional development led her to complete various training courses, including NVQ Levels 1 and 2. These qualifications equipped her with the skills and confidence needed to excel in her role as a carer.
Working in a smaller company, Marion found the environment to be supportive and open. The ability to discuss concerns and receive guidance was invaluable to her growth. This supportive atmosphere has persisted as the company evolved into Berkeley Home Health, ensuring that Marion always felt part of a team that valued her input and dedication.
Role Diversity and Challenges:
Over the years, Marion’s role has been diverse and multifaceted. She has taken on various responsibilities, including providing bank work at a local hospice, occasional live-in care for clients, and shifts in hospitals, particularly during late evenings to offer respite for families. Each of these roles presented unique challenges, especially for Marion, who considers herself to be naturally shy. Despite this, she embraced the opportunities to extend her skills and contribute to different settings, enhancing her experience and adaptability.
Client Relationships and Job Satisfaction:
One of the most fulfilling aspects of Marion’s career has been the deep, long-term relationships she has developed with her clients. She has supported some individuals for as long as 15 years, witnessing their transitions and challenges, such as moving to one-room living. Her ability to build strong, positive relationships with clients has been a cornerstone of her success, providing both her and the clients with a sense of security and mutual respect.
Marion often reflects on the life stories and memories shared by her clients, expressing a genuine regret at not having known them in their younger years. This connection to her clients has not only enhanced her job satisfaction but has also given her a profound appreciation of the impact she has had on their lives.
