Remarkable care for remarkable clients
Shirley K, aged 91, has led a vibrant and remarkable life. Born in Chelsea, London in 1932, Shirley emerged as a beloved theatrical actor, gracing stages in London and Hollywood. Her career highlights include performances in “Children of the New Forest” (1955) and appearances at the Lily Palmer Theatre and ITV TV Playhouse. Beyond her artistic achievements, Shirley’s personal journey has been equally dynamic, involving two marriages, raising two children, and living abroad during her Hollywood career.
Prior to engaging with us at Berkeley Home Health, Shirley resided at home until health complications necessitated a hospital stay. Post-discharge, she moved to Nowton Court, a supported living facility in Bury St Edmunds, where she initially received a palliative care package.
Supporting health challenges
Shirley’s resilience is truly tested by her current health challenges. She lives with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, advanced vascular dementia, CoPD, and a critical heart valve condition, which she chose not to surgically address six years ago. Despite these adversities, her spirit remains undiminished.
When we began providing visiting care for Shirley three years ago, the challenges were multifaceted. Shirley’s complex health conditions led to frequent fatigue, vulnerability to colds, and fluctuating symptoms. Her fierce independence clashed with her increasing physical limitations, evidenced by a fall that resulted in a broken pelvis and necessitated walking aids.
The care approach that was needed was as unique as Shirley herself. Understanding her deep love for walking, our care team accommodated her desire to stay active while managing her medication needs with four daily visits. The care team’s sensitivity to Shirley’s personal appearance and dignity is heart-warming; they ensure she always has her cherished lipstick and hairbrush, and even her favourite hat for visitors.
One poignant example of the bespoke care provided includes a gesture by Karen, one of the managers, who purchased a pair of shoes for Shirley after noticing her fondness for them, as Shirley only had slippers. Such acts of kindness are a testament to the personalised care we deliver at Berkeley Home Health.
The care team also encourages Shirley to engage in activities at Nowton Court, maintaining her social connections and mental stimulation. Her last outing to Felixstowe seaside is a reminder of the fulfilling life she continues to lead under our care.
The impact of our care
Shirley’s Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) has expressed that without the diligent and compassionate care provided by us at Berkeley Home Health, Shirley might not still be with us. This statement is a powerful endorsement of the vital role our care team plays in not just prolonging life but enhancing its quality.
Shirley K’s journey with our team in our East of England branch exemplifies how personalised, compassionate care can significantly impact a person’s life. It is a story of life, love, and the relentless pursuit of individual dignity and joy, even in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
