Every month each Berkeley Home Health branch awards a ‘Carer of the Month’ nominated by peers and mangers. Nominees are recognised for one of the following behaviours: integrity, trust, excellence, positivity, efficiency, empathy and teamwork.
South East branch: Kate
Kate, one of our amazing live-in carers for Berkeley Home Health South East branch, was awarded January’s Carer of the Month. Nominated by Jola, her Care Manager, for being the best proactive carer and for her excellence for caring for client Mark.
Kate has been a carer with us since 2016 and has been a live-in carer for the same amount of time for client Mark. Mark has Multiple Sclerosis and needs to be moved with the use of a ceiling hoist, mobilised with an electric wheelchair, and he requires full support with cooking, personal care, and housework. Kate is also Mark’s driver.
Kate has made Mark’s life much easier. She has found ways to renovate Mark’s flat and the garden and has also managed to integrate Mark’s relatives together again as the relationship had broken down. Mark now enjoys seeing his two daughters regularly and can watch his grandchildren grow. Kate invites Mark’s family for garden parties or pizza.
Mark is also supported to be part of the community, Kate drives him to a centre weekly which provides self-development and training opportunities; Mark loves going to socialise and works in the shop based there. Any events that Mark wants to attend she will ensure he gets to attend.
One example of the lengths Kate goes to was when she organised for Mark to be able to take a train. Because of the steps at the local station, it was impossible. However, Kate worked with the train staff to allow them to access the cargo carriage. Mark was absolutely thrilled with the experience. Kate has built up a very good relationship with all external professionals involved in Mark’s care too.
Jola said of Kate being awarded Carer of the Month:
“I am so very pleased that Kate has been recognised for the outstanding care she provides. She goes above and beyond to ensure Mark has a fun and fulfilling life.”
