Demonstrating the principles of dignity in action
We are a local live in home care provider who are proactive in our approach to person centred care and demonstrating the principles of Dignity in Action.
Dignity Action Day is an annual opportunity for health and social care workers and businesses to uphold people’s rights to dignity. As part of this year’s campaign, The Berkeley Home Health South East team spent time with two clients and their carers discussing the life changing support and dignity they have received from their live in care team to live at home and within their community.
Linda explained that having a live in carer with them has allowed her and her friend to be as independent as they can while still feeling safe.
“My live in carers help me to look and feel good about myself. We go out most days to garden centres, pub lunches, parks and feeding the birds and we can only do this with help”.
Linda also went on to say
“They respect our home and allow us the space that we need to be ourselves. If we want to watch tv we can, if we want to be grumpy we can”.
Linda’s house friend Lynda also lives with learning disabilities but requires a lot more support from the live in carers. Berkeley Home Health live in carers, Janet and Maria, not only help with Lynda’s day to day care needs but also engage with her abilities. Maria has recently been supporting Lynda with drawing and writing which has really brought her alive and made her feel extremely proud of herself. These drawings have then been sent through to the Berkeley Home Health head office and added to their ‘Above & Beyond’ wall, where all the office team can celebrate in the amazing support that is going on in their communities.
Live in carer Maria explains:
“It is important for me to promote choice and be as encouraging as possible”.
Also, as part of the Dignity Action Day 2018, Berkeley Home Health provided pots and plants for Linda and Lynda to plant Dignity flowers in their garden.
